Level 1 – Lesson 8 – Audio Assignment 224B- What is necessary for Success in the Spiritual Practice
1. What are the main teachings brought out in the audio lecture recording? Explain in your own words
The teachings brought out in this audio lecture was a continuation of what is essential as a practitioner of the spiritual path. The path, the practice of yoga is a reflective and meditative one that needs to be practiced regularly (daily,) both formally and informally according to one’s capacity. This leads to the correct understanding of the source of pain and suffering, which is egoism. Once this is understood and the practices of purification are followed, then an aspirant will grow and develop spiritual strength and focus to be able to let go of past negatives and move on to enlightenment. In understanding the source being egoism, we aspirants must be mindful in thought, speech and action. In doing so we must be aware that it is a misconception that truth should just be blurted out at any time just because it is the truth, this could be egotistical if it causes conflicts with others and if it also creates mental agitation. Even though words should be used for the truth, the manner in which it’s delivered should be for the higher good, to create harmony. This is done through focusing on perfection in action and not the result of action because the ultimate focus is purity of heart, selfless service, maat ari.
In addition, we should practice detachment at all times so as to not get caught up in the world. If we do we must understand that purification takes time so be forgiving of our self, patient and persistent. However, the moment we catch ourselves we have become aware which is an essential part of the process, we must then keep focused on moving forward, essentially get right back on track. Also, even if it seems that we are not going anywhere or the disciplines is not working it’s important to understand that every positive vibration have a positive effect in our life no matter how small.
2. Are you currently implementing the teaching given in the book and the lecture? If so which one(s)? I have implemented the alternate breathing exercise technique as suggested in the reading lesson titled “basic schedule of spiritual practice” in the mornings. I have also become more steady and consistent in keeping my minimum time for spiritual practice and sticking to it. I am also remembering the teachings during my daily activities and I am practicing them.
3. If not then how will you implement the teachings you are not currently practicing, in your life and spiritual practice? I am currently practicing most of the teachings to my capacity, however I would like to be more consistent in daily silent time. I will do so by making it a part of my schedule.
